  1. 1. On October 18, 1867, the United States took possession of Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, or less than two cents an acre, in an event known as the Alaska Purchase or Seward's Folly.
  2. 2. The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) was formed on October 18, 1922. It later became the British Broadcasting Corporation upon its Royal Charter renewal in 1927.
  3. 3. The Soviet Venera 4 spacecraft became the first probe to send data back from Venus on this date in 1967.
