- January 20 is set as the inauguration day of the U.S. president in the 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The amendment was ratified on January 23, 1933.
- Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first U.S. president inaugurated on this date, for his second term in 1937.
- The first general treaty to prohibit nuclear weapon testing, the "Treaty banning nuclear weapon tests in the atmosphere, in outer space and under water," also known as the Partial Test Ban Treaty (PTBT), was opened for signing on January 20, 1964.
- January 20, 1679, saw the first recorded eruption of Fuji, Japan’s highest mountain.
