The establishment of this day is rooted in the release of the inaugural State of the Tropics report by Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi in 2014. This report underlined the urgent need to tackle the obstacles faced by nations and environments located in tropical areas.

It all began with a group of 13 prestigious tropical research institutions who initiated the conversation about having a dedicated day for tropical regions. This idea was brought to life by James Cook University, based in Australia, with the commencement of the State of the Tropics project in 2011. The intent was to provide a widespread assessment of the issues plaguing the tropical regions and strategize potential solutions.

The final report drawn up during the project shed light on several critical areas concerning tropical regions, including their rich and varied ecosystems, exponential population growth rates, and environmental changes. It further analyzed how different economic, social and political dimensions were impacting the conditions in these regions.

Today, the International Day of the Tropics not only plays a crucial role in celebrating the unique diversity that these tropical regions offer, but it also emphasizes the distinct challenges and prospects that these regions encounter.
