- In ancient times, May 1st was celebrated as the beginning of spring and fertility with festivals such as the Roman Floralia or the Celtic Beltane, which involved dancing around a maypole and lighting bonfires.
- The tradition of giving "May baskets" – small baskets of flowers and sweets – on May 1st evolved from May Day customs. People would hang a basket on the doorknob of a friend or loved one as a way to celebrate the arrival of spring.
