History of US Army Birthday

Each year, on June 14th, the U.S. Army marks its birthday. This important military event celebrates the formation of the U.S. Army.

The inception of this day dates back to the time of the Revolutionary War when “the Continental Army” was established by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1775, to unify the thirteen colonies in their struggle against British occupancy. This was the first instance of American citizen fighters coming together to form a united military force.

The Continental Army, under the leadership of General George Washington, initially consisted of roughly 22,000 soldiers. After the end of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Army was dissolved, leaving the U.S. without a standing army for a brief period. However, it became apparent that a structured military organization was essential for the country’s safety.

As a result, the United States War Department, now known as the Department of Defense, was instituted in 1789. Subsequently, in the next year, a national military unit, named the Legion of the United States, was created under General Anthony Wayne. This formation eventually became the present-day U.S. Army.

It wasn’t until 1926 that the U.S. government officially recognized Army Birthday. Intriguingly, Flag Day is also celebrated on June 14th, which intensifies the patriotic aura of this day.

Over the years, the U.S. Army has significantly contributed to pivotal wars and conflicts such as the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the American Civil War, Spanish-American War, both World Wars, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, and the Iraq War. Additionally, it undertakes various peacekeeping operations globally.
