International Self-Care Day -

Updated on by

Every year on July 24th, we celebrate International Self-Care Day. This important observance serves as a reminder of the vital role self-care plays in maintaining our mental, physical, and emotional well-being. More than just a personal indulgence, self-care is a day-to-day priority and necessary for a healthy, satisfying life.

The day is not only about individuals practicing self-care but also about healthcare professionals promoting and teaching the importance of self-care in preventing diseases and managing optimal health. The day is truly a global event, enhancing awareness about holistic self-care routines and habits.

History of International Self-Care Day

Celebrated every year on July 24, International Self-Care Day was established to underscore the crucial role self-care plays in leading a healthy lifestyle across the globe. This day was inaugurated by the Global Self-Care Federation, known then as the World Self-Medication Industry, in 2011. The date, 24/7, was chosen as a representation of the constant and ongoing need for self-care.

The annual observance aims to promote an understanding of the concept of self-care, encourage habits of responsible self-care, stress the significance of health literacy, highlight the role of self-care in leading a wholesome lifestyle, and illustrate the necessity to incorporate self-care at every stage of life.

In 2017, The Global Self-Care Federation introduced a concrete guideline for effective self-care, named the Seven Pillars of Self-Care. These pillars include health literacy, physical activity, healthy eating, risk avoidance or mitigation, good hygiene, optimal use of products and services, and logically and responsibly using health services and products.

Presently, International Self-Care Day serves as an international platform to engage and involve people in the broad idea of self-care, emphasizing its crucial role in daily life.
